Does sick leave cost your company money?

In 2017 it was reported that the cost of absenteeism to the UK economy was rising to £18 billion

Analysis commissioned by FirstCare as part of a broader report by the Centre for Economic and Business Research forecasts an increase to £21 billion by 2020 and £26 billion by 2030.

These levels of absenteeism are said to be contributed to by the increase in mental health problems affecting mostly people in their 30s and 40s, which apparently increase even more due to the Christmas and summer vacations.

The report revealed many other analyses, which we have not included in our blog article, such as that musculoskeletal problems continue to affect the older generation, who require time off to recover from surgery.

The Government recommends that managers be better trained to effectively implement sickness absence policies and have a greater understanding of increased employee attendance. This is due to the identification that after six weeks of sickness absence, the employee is unlikely to return to work soon. You can read more here on the "gov.uk".

Clearly, employees can sometimes feel pressured to return to work before they have fully recovered.
