The differences between traditional calls and IP voice calls

VoIP vs. conventional telephony The new technologies sector and especially the telephony industry is constantly evolving. Now companies can make calls over analog, digital and IP voice technology. But the terminology used by telephone companies is sometimes so technical that we do not always know how VoIP differs from traditional telephony, and which is more suitable for our company. What is VoIP? VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is a group of resources that allow the voice signal to travel over the Internet using an IP protocol.

 

Basically, it is a voice channel that allows making and receiving calls to any type of device that can be connected to the network such as computer, tablet, Smartphone or IP phone. In this type of telephony the number of channels is as large as the bandwidth allows and is offered by our VoIP telephony provider.

How does IP telephony work?

When we make a call through an IP voice telephone, our voice is digitized, compressed and sent in IP data packets. That is, the analog signal is transformed to digital format and the signal is compressed to Internet Protocol (IP) and these data packets are sent over the Internet to the receiver. Once they have reached their destination, they are decompressed and the original voice signal is recovered.

Depending on the device used to make the calls, we distinguish three types of IP telephony communication:

- Computer to Computer.

- From Computer to Telephone.

- Phone to Phone.

Differences between VoIP and conventional telephony

1) IP telephony relies on a network structure. Therefore, there are no limitations as to the number of conversations that can be held at the same time.

2) One aspect to highlight for the business environment is that, by not depending on physical lines, it is possible to create an interconnected network of stores/branches of the same company under a single main number.

3) In an IP phone call, the data packets with the digitized voice signal are sent over the Internet to the recipient and each packet can use one path to reach its destination. In a conventional telephone call, on the other hand, the PBX establishes a permanent connection between the two parties.

4) Generally, VOIP providers deliver features for which conventional telephone operators charge separate fees, so it is usually cheaper. Businesses can take advantage of IP technology to implement a virtual PBX that streamlines all their processes, with the latest technological developments, and avoiding the costs of installing a physical PBX.
